It was the same look. Mei felt it in her very core, deep in her bones. She saw that expression every night in her dreams - in her nightmares. Burned into her mind’s eye every waking moment. She could never get away from him. She could never forget that smile, those eyes… His face. And now? Now it was back. It was no longer just in her memory, it was right here in front of her. It wasn’t a phantom of sensation that caressed her the instant she started to feel safe, ripping even that slight relief from her. Shouhei was here. He was here. She blinked. And Mei saw her daughter standing there, the scarlet blooming across her dress. Her daughter, crouched next to a motionless heap and digging her hands greedily into the torn open flesh. Her daughter, hands stained forever crimson by her sins. Her daughter. Her daughter standing there, standing there with his face. The air was gone. No matter how much Mei tried to breathe, it did no good. She couldn’t breathe, sharp pain streaking through her chest as ice flooded her veins. Everything smelled like iron. It was too much. She took a step back - stumbled, hit the wall and fell. From the ground she fumbled, fighting to breathe as she tried desperately to stand. But her legs were jelly, the lack of oxygen slowly draining her strength. Somebody stood over here. Mei looked up sharply, but… He was gone. It was just daughter was staring down at her, concerned. “Mother?” The crimson smeared across her lips, dripping down her jaw. Her teeth were stained with blood, meat stuck between the edges. “Mother, I’m here. Focus on me. Can you hear me?” Mei didn’t know if she nodded or not, but her daughter continued as if she had. “Okay. Deep breaths, count with me. Inhale, one…” Those bloody hands gripped hers tightly, squeezed her back into the moment. Mei inhaled sharply. “Good. Now exhale, two…” Released. In and out. In and out. Mei closed her eyes, her shoulders slumped as she went limp. “… Mother?” A sob stuck in her throat. Mei looked up, met her daughter’s terrified gaze, and began to wail. “Mother?” Her daughter tightened her grip, looking uncertain. “Why are you…?” “I wanted to protect you,” she hiccuped. “From him. From… From all of this.” Her eyes flickered to the corpse behind them, and a whimper escaped her when she looked away sharply. “But I… I can’t.” “I don’t understand.” Her daughter looked hopelessly lost. “Protect me from what?” “Your… Your father.”

Unofficial hiatus... haven’t really uploaded anything new lately. It’s admittedly mostly stuff from high school, that I never got around to uploading. 😅
